YouTube – IPL 2010 Live Starts with Technical Error!

The season of IPL 2010 has made huge media coverage in the past few months, Why? it is the first time IPL will been streamed live on YouTube for FREE. YouTube have signed a two year deal that will stream the IPL over the Internet for the first time, featuring 60 matches over the next 45 days. For those of you who do not know, IPL is the worlds famous 20/20 cricket Indian Premier League which host and bring the best players all around the world in one lively super league.

With there being so much hype and high expectations, YouTube started with a bad first impression for many first time viewers in India. Many fans were left disappointed with a technical error which cut the first 30 minutes, they were eagerly waiting to see the 2009 IPL champions, Deccan Chargers kickstart their season against the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Lessons to be learned

With India being seen as an influential IT driven economy their must be important lesson's to be learned. The majority of the viewers reside in India, who have high expectations, especially when wanting to watch the most eagerly awaited national sporting season. Many Indians would have been using YouTube for the first time, and for many a negative brand impression will be tough to overcome. YouTube will be in the spotlight for the remaining tournament and a repeat could further damage their reputation and harm their penetration plans in India.

Some people commented about how YouTube should have tested the system prior the stream going live, yes but not knowing the amount of viewers that will tune in would have been difficult to prepare for, but they should have prepared. Also, people were annoyed that their is a substantial delay in the live stream, and well more than the 5 minutes YouTube clearly state. But some people commented about it being free so what do you expect? Well everyone is watching, all eyes are on YouTube to deliver what they promised, that is to watch the IPL LIVE on YouTube.

Anyone launching into the India market, and investing huge amounts should be prepared to plan. The current Internet users in India are young, smart and impatient! Having a first good impression will be influential in the success of the brand, and a first negative impression will cost you if you haven't got the funds to put things right again.
